Getting Started!

If you live in Northern Utah, attending Utah Bug Club meetings and field trips is a great way to get started into the world of butterflies.  Because Utah Bug Club is associated with the Utah Lepidopterists' Society, our curriculum is biased strongly towards collecting, photographing, and raising butterflies.

For a list of future Utah Bug Club meetings, please visit our meetings and field trips page.

Recommended Field Guides:

For taxonomy and identification, the recommended field guide for butterflies is "Butterflies of North America" by Jim Brock and Kenn Kaufman.  It is a comprehensive guide that is helpful for beginners.  The cost for this book roughly $14.00.  If you are looking for more information about butterfly and moth rearing, photography, gardening, mounting, etc., "Basic Techniques For Observing and Studying Moths and Butterflies" by William D. Winter is highly recommended.
